Taking classes
As a general rule, applications will not be accepted after the registration period has passed.
This course is available to students enrolled at Tohoku University. Family members of international students and other students cannot take this course. Those who do not have a Tohoku-dai ID will not be able to take the course because this course uses Google Classroom.
Guides for classes starting in April will be published in mid-March.
Guides for classes starting in October will be published in mid-September.
There is no tuition fee. Please follow your instructor’s instructions regarding purchasing textbooks for use in class.
Steps for taking classes
Please read the course guide carefully and apply for enrollment by the deadline.
Please register in Google Classroom for the class that matches your level, participate in the class, and register for the course during the course registration period.
Placement test
Have you applied for course registration? If you have, you will receive an email from jlpk@g-mail.tohoku-university.jp. If you have not received it, please contact the JLPK office so we can check your registration.
If you are a beginner who has never studied Japanese, you will start at level 1, so you don’t have to take the placement test. In addition, those who took the JLPK program in the previous semester will be issued a continuation level, so you don’t have to retake the placement test in the second semester. If you want to change your level, please refer to question 16.
Continuation levels are only available for the next semester. Otherwise, you have to take the placement test again.
Is the email in your spam folder? If you are having trouble, please contact the JLPK office(jlpk@g-mail.tohoku-university.jp).
Level

-
See the Contact Information in the Guide and discuss it with the relevant program coordinator.
Note: The office staff cannot change your level.
- →
- Changing to a higher level: when applying for the class, use the "Will take the PT" option to register, then take the PT.
- →
- Changing to a lower level: see the Contact Information in the Guide and discuss it with the relevant program coordinator.
If you took classes in the previous term, at the end of that term you were notified of your level for the next term.
If you fulfilled certain requirements, your level increased without taking the PT.
Next term, if you wish to continue taking classes at a higher level, please check the progression requirements to make sure you meet them.
Please note that the Progression System takes into account your performance in the previous term only. Performance in terms prior to that, or over multiple terms, are not considered.
See the Guide for Progression System details
For kanji classes, you can choose only one class at your kanji level (determined by the result of the placement test), one level below or one level above.
Credit
In general, you cannot get credit for classes in the Japanese Language Program at Kawauchi.
However, you may get credit depending on your program. If you are part of a Student Exchange Program, your home university may credit the classes after your return. Please check with your department's Educational Affairs Section (or program coordinator) before enrolling.
Note that even for classes that can be credited, in some cases the credits will not count unless you register them as General Education subjects through the Student Affairs Information System. Again, please check with your department's Educational Affairs Section (or program coordinator) before registration.
Enrollment Period
It depends on the level, but some classes begin in the second term. Please check the course guide and registration dates.
Please talk to the class instructor in advance.
The instructor might permit this, but probably not as it is usually assumed you will attend classes until the end of the term.
Even if the instructor consents, since attendance is part of the grading criteria, leaving early will affect your final grade.
Course registration
The office staff cannot provide registration consultations.
See the Contact Information in the Guide and ask the relevant program coordinator for advice.
Please join the Google Classroom and follow your teacher’s instructions in class. Check theGoogle Classroom Code Listfor the Google Classroom code. You can contact your teacher through the Google Classroom stream or by commenting on posts.
It depends on the semester. Students with 0range IDs can take classes that are not listed in the course guide as exclusive to students of a specific program. However, as there is a limit on the number of students, please check directly with the instructor.
Please contact the instructor directly. If the request is made within the course cancellation period stated in the course guide, the course will be registered with the grade as E=canceled. E grades will not appear on your transcript.
Grades
Once grades are published (1st term: September; 2nd term: March), you can see them on the Japanese Language Program's Academic Affairs System. A notification containing instructions for viewing your grades will be sent to your email address at that time.
Since grades can only be viewed on our system, you must log in using your Nihongo ID and password. (This requires connecting to the campus network.)
If you return to your home country before grades are published, please contact the International Education Section at the Student Exchange Division to request a transcript.
Transcript
You cannot get a transcript from the Automatic Certificate Issuance Machines as with normal classes.
Please ask a member of the office staff or request one by email.
It takes several days to issue the transcript, so please request it well in advance of when you need it.
The request process is the same, whether you need your latest transcript or a past one.
If you are no longer in Japan, the transcript will be delivered by email (PDF).
① Receiving your transcript by email (PDF):
- →
- Please tell the staff that you want it delivered by email when requesting it.
- →
- The Student Exchange Division cannot send your transcript by post. Please provide a self-addressed envelope with sufficient international postage to your department's Educational Affairs Section and request it from them. The Student Exchange Division will provide your department with the transcript, and they will send it to you by post.
